With you at every step

No surprises on scope or fee. You know what we will do, and what it costs, before we start. The partner who reads your books is the person you talk to.

Consult

01

You send a request. A partner reads it personally and, if there is a fit, arranges an introductory call. Requests sent before we open in early 2027 are reviewed first.

Diagnose

02

We look at your books, your systems and how work actually flows, so the proposal is built on facts.

Propose

03

A written proposal sets out scope, deliverables and fee. Nothing starts until you agree to it.

Execute

04

The partner who scoped the work does the work, and stays your contact for as long as we work together.

Bookkeeper vs CPA vs Controller: who does your Ontario business actually need?

  • A bookkeeper records what happened. A CPA interprets it, reports it and files it. A controller owns the finance function day to day. A fractional CFO helps decide what happens next.
  • Most owner-managed Ontario businesses need a reliable bookkeeper and a CPA long before they need a controller.
  • “CPA” is a protected designation in Ontario. “Bookkeeper” is not. Ask what training and standards stand behind the title.

Notice to reader vs review engagement in Canada, explained plainly

  • Notice to Reader (Section 9200) was replaced by CSRS 4200, Compilation Engagements, for periods ending on or after 14 December 2021.
  • A compilation gives no assurance. A review engagement (CSRE 2400) gives limited assurance. An audit gives reasonable assurance.
  • In Ontario, review and audit engagements must be performed by a public accounting licence holder.

The month-end close checklist we use for every client

  • A month-end close is the routine that turns a month of transactions into numbers you can rely on: everything recorded, every account reconciled, the period locked.
  • Reconcile every balance sheet account, not just the bank. Errors hide in receivables, payables, HST and shareholder loans.
  • Do the steps in the same order every month. Cash first, then revenue and expenses, then accruals, then review.

Cash vs accrual accounting: which one should your business use?

  • Cash accounting records income when money arrives and expenses when money leaves. Accrual accounting records income when it is earned and expenses when they are incurred.
  • For income tax, Canadian businesses are generally required to use the accrual method. Corporations should assume accrual.
  • Farming and fishing businesses may use the cash method for tax, and CRA allows it for some self-employed commission agents. Ask before you assume you qualify.

When does a 20-person company outgrow spreadsheets? (the ERP question)

  • Company size alone does not tell you when to move. Re-keying, version conflicts and dependence on one person do.
  • There are three routes: off-the-shelf, configured, and custom. Most owner-operated businesses belong in the first two.
  • An implementation is mostly process and data work, not software work. Plan your own team's time accordingly.

How much does monthly bookkeeping cost in Ontario?

  • Bookkeeping cost is driven by workload and complexity: transaction volume, accounts, payroll, sales tax, inventory, clean-up work, software and reporting frequency.
  • The three common pricing models are hourly, fixed monthly and value-based. Each suits a different situation.
  • The lowest quote often excludes reconciliations, adjustments or year-end support, and those costs arrive later.

5 KPIs every owner-operated business should watch monthly

  • Five KPIs cover most of what an owner-operator needs monthly: cash runway, gross margin by line, accounts receivable days, revenue per labour hour, and owner's draw against profit.
  • Each KPI is only as good as the books behind it. Reconciled, accrual-based monthly figures come first.
  • Compare each KPI to your own trend and your own terms, not to generic industry averages.

What a business systems audit actually looks like, step by step

  • A business systems audit maps how work really flows through your people, tools and data, then identifies where time and accuracy are lost.
  • It follows a fixed sequence: scope, inventory, interviews, process mapping, data tracing, analysis, prioritization and a written report.
  • Typical findings are ordinary and fixable: double entry, manual re-keying, approvals buried in email, and spreadsheets doing a system's job.
